Reducing drift is a crucial aspect of agricultural drone applications, directly impacting human health and the environment. It is key to the safe and effective aerial application of plant protection products.
In 2024, the European Commission clarified that agricultural drones can be used in Europe, provided they meet safety requirements. The EU also emphasized its ongoing research projects exploring the value of drones in agriculture, future trends, and the development of digital management platforms.
The Commission stated: “Aerial application of plant protection products (including by drones) is permitted, but subject to specific conditions laid down in legislation. Aerial application must offer advantages in reducing impacts on human health and the environment compared to other methods, or, in the absence of other viable alternatives, must employ the best available technology to minimize drift. The plant protection products used must be approved for aerial spraying, operators and companies must obtain specific authorization, risk management measures must be in place near public areas, and operation near residential areas is prohibited. Member State authorities are responsible for reviewing and approving authorization applications.”
In December 2024, a parliamentary delegation led by Portugal formally submitted a proposal calling for the swift adoption of amendments to the Sustainable Use Directive. This proposal received support from Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, and Sweden.
